The Housing Initiative is a major component of South Shore 2030: Choosing Our Future, a multi-year plan dedicated to crafting a comprehensive economic and community development effort for the South Shore.
The housing strategy calls for 44,000 new homes by the 2030 (over 2010 levels) to make the South Shore more competitive. The strategy focuses particular attention on attracting young people and retaining the baby boomers looking to downsize their larger homes and stay on the South Shore. It also focuses attention on location. It uses housing as a strategy for community development by strengthening downtowns or other centers of activity like retail districts. In short, our approach is to build more of what the market wants rather than what past anti-growth zoning has produced.
